We started by reviewing each app screen, applying usability heuristics from Nielsen's 10 general principles for interaction design and Web Content Accessibility Guidelines. We noted violations and some recommendations to address them. There were several issues we found on each screen, demonstrating a need to implement design changes. The intern took the lead identifying violations, while I led discussion on reasons why they were issues along with how to address them.
We reviewed some competitors to see current trends in the travel app space. The StudentUniverse app UI had not been updated for a couple years, and competitive analysis revealed significant differences between design decisions. We compiled a list of these differences including interactions methods, expected flows, and UI elements.
I worked with the intern to create prototypes of the new app UI. We incorporated data from the usability review and competitive analysis. I was able to teach about principles of UI design, accessibility, and wire framing as we worked through prototyping.
We finalized prototypes after some iterations and presented them as recommendations to the VP of Product and Global Managing Director. Reactions were positive, with implementations planned in the future. Accessibility was a central part of discussion, with initiatives outlined for new designs moving forward.
Prototyping more screens would provide a more complete flow that could be further refined. We only worked on a few main screens, with much more to look into.
Adding some usability testing would be beneficial in identifying more problems and validating design work.
Taking the lead on the project and mentoring someone helped me grow. I had to convey my thoughts, motives, and understanding in a way that was helpful and coherent. I also learned a lot from her asking questions and proposing ideas I otherwise wouldn’t have thought of.
Although there were no direct measurements on conversion or financial gain, there was so much benefit from the project. Accessibility is taking priority, creating a better UX for everyone. In addition, usability has been greatly improved which should translate to more repeat users and happy customers.
